Abstract
Background: The sleep quality and excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) is an important influence in school performance. Also, insufficient sleep in teenage years has adverse effects on developmental processes and neurocognitive ability. The purpose of the present study was to determine the prevalence of EDS, the quality of sleep and its related factors in middle and high school students in Korea.

Methods: We had a sleep questrionnaire survey which included individual sociodemographic characteristics, the Epworth sleepiness scale (ESS), the Stanford sleepiness scale (SSS), and the Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI) in 1139 middle and high school students.

Result: There were 503 (44.2%) middle school and 636 (55.8%) high school students in the survey. The average age of the middle school students was 13.65¡Ë¢ç¡§u0.65 years old and of the high school students 15.96¡Ë¢ç¡§u0.70 years old. The average amount of sleep for the middle school students was 7.10¡Ë¢ç¡§u1.40 hours (male 7.32¡Ë¢ç¡§u1.30, female 6.87¡Ë¢ç¡§u1.50) and for the high school students 5.82¡Ë¢ç¡§u1.44 hours (male 6.01¡Ë¢ç¡§u1.47, female 5.62¡Ë¢ç¡§u1.40) per night. The overall prevalence of EDS was 13.2-22.3% in middle school and 20.7-22.9% in high school students. The overall prevalence of poor sleep quality was 44.4% in middle school and 72.3% in high school students.

Conclusion: The overall quality of sleep in adolescence is poor, especially in high school students. Trying to find ways to improve sleep quality is strongly recommended, as it will improve academic performance as well as health.
